Since 2010 Shine has supported over 30 students through our Bursary Program which offers student support as well as the school fees, transport, and items such as books, stationery, uniforms, and groceries. This support has been life-changing for children and young people found in some of the most deprived villages in the region, who did not have the help at home.
Shine Bursary has meant so much to students like Inen and his sister Ama (pictured here). Inen had great potential, struggled to attend school due to his inability to pay his school fees. Finishing primary school with good grades he gained a place at a local boarding school. His grandmother was too sick to work and could not support the family. Thanks to the Shine Bursary he became the first young man in his area to not only complete his secondary education but also gain a place at college.
Ama, who had to leave school after becoming a mother at a young age, continued to receive regular support from Shines team which helped her to overcome the many challenges she faced raising a family. At 21 she finally began a tailoring course which she thoroughly enjoys. She now makes beautiful dresses which she can sell and she also helps with clothes repairs at Shine Village!
Moving through the education system in Malawi has many challenges and is very expensive for families living in rural areas. School fees are hard to pay. Donations received to support this area of Shine’s work are very important and greatly appreciated.

Shine Afterschool club currently supports 40 children on a daily basis. We are grateful to supporters in New Zealand who helped to provide key textbooks which children do not have access to at school. The local schools are very overcrowded and children easily fall behind – more details here.
