Shine hosted it’s annual Phwando for 2012 on Friday 27th April at Lazaats Hotel, Cottingham. We are slightly biased but we have to say the event was a great success.

We hosted 83 enthusiastic supporters in the Pavillion room; with a colourful lighting display and lively atmosphere throughout the evening. We were encouraged by the supporter participation in the evening’s programme. Diverse activities included the Head and Tails game, won by Phillip Banda but seeing him give the monies back to the charity. Well Phillip is a trustee so that’s what we’d expect! The auction progressed at a a steady pace and saw a very exiting bidding war for the culinary prize of the cook in your house, provided by Phil and Debs, £375 well spent. The presentation focused on the next steps to progress the work of Shine in Kuntemanje, Malawi in terms of acquiring funds for the community building programme. We saw an up to date artists impression of the Shine village, which showed all the possible buildings on our land. If each person could give £1000 then the first multi-purpose community building could be a reality. We are focused on gaining this funding through individual donors and grant applications. More importanly it was a passionate invitation to join us in shining our light brighter. It also included footage from the brilliant inteview with Burnsie on Humberside and many photos of the children in Malawi.

Throughtout the evening we were blessed with the great sounds provided by the Sounds of Southern Africa, SOSA-XA choir. The choir were charismatic and hypnotic as they banged the rhythms on the pavillion’s wooden dance floor. By the end of the night the party saw around half of the supporters on the floor armed with percussive instruments and throwing some great moves.

Please be very encouraged to learn that we raised £2000 after meeting all our costs, which is a great achievement. Thanks again for coming out and supporting Shine Relief Trust.

Shine Relief’s Trustees, Phil and Deborah visited Malawi in January to meet with the children and volunteers in Kuntumanji. The Chief , headmen and the Trustees of Shine Malawi were thrilled to report on the differences being seen in the children’s lives. Many of them live without any parental care and therefore the support being provided by Shine UK has been truely life saving. The feeding program is growing daily and the children in the orphan care program are growing daily, in confidence and in hope for the future. Deborah commented “Seeing the children looking so well, 18 months on, was really wonderful. We knew each family had endure so much through sickness, close relatives dying, the challenge of poor housing and food supplies running out. However they have come through with smiles on their faces and grown so much, thanks to Shine’s ongoing support.” Long term orphan care is underway with plans for phase one being drawn up. The first building to be built will provide many more children with food and medical support. If you would like to give a gift to help with the construction of our building or any other area of the work then please contact the office or download a form on-line now! Thank you.

Light up their Christmas Campaign 2011 offers you the opportunity to invest in safe and free lighting for a family living in extreme poverty. For £12 a solar – powered lamp will be given to help a family living in the villages of Kuntumanji, Malawi. In return you will receive a Christmas card detailing the gift which can then be sent with your own personal message to someone for Christmas. The lights are provided through Shine Corporation Malawi a company which has dedicated its profits to help the ongoing work of Shine Relief Malawi. Solar lamps will replace dangerous and unhealthy kerosene lamps which are very expensive to use. 80% of Malawians have no access to electricity.

Your hard earned miles will continue to make a huge difference to the ongoing projects of Shine Relief Trust in Malawi helping the most vulnerable children in the battle against poverty and injustice. We hope to see some of you back again next year!

Saturday 18th July saw 20 enthusiastic participants raring to go as the forecast showers subsided and we put our feet to the pedals for the scenic 15 mile route 66 Shine Charity Bike Ride 2011 from Cottingham to South Dalton.Getting the marshals to their posts ahead of the young and fit proved a challenge as some fast paced riding unfolded between Tom, Alex and Laurence across the varying terrain of off and on road sections and the undulations of the Yorkshire Wolds, through surrounding villages and poppy clad fields before the final descent into South Dalton for strawberries and ice cream in the sunshine outside the village hall. Nearly all who started finished, minus one slight mechanical hitch. Some were more physically challenged than others and faced their own mental battle on the hills, a gentle reminder of the daily struggles faced by the children of Kuntamanje, Malawi, some of whom walk barefoot 6 miles to school each day.

The total raised was over £2000 in sponsorship money which will go a long way to helping the orphans and vulnerable children of Kuntamanje and ensuring the vital relief work of Shine will continue in this remote rural area of Malawi.

Thank you to all who helped to make this day such a success in so many ways from marshals and participants to cake baking and entertainment, we hope that you all felt as blessed as we did to be part of such a great cause in bringing justice and support to our brothers and sisters in Malawi in their daily battle against the effects of extreme poverty and the ravages of a stolen childhood.

Thank you again for your ongoing support of the work of Shine Relief Trust, we hope to see you all back again next year.

A grant has been provided in response to the needs of the 5 families we are supporting. Only one of the families has a parent, a mother and she is crippled by Polio and unable to walk. Her name is Alwa, she lost her husband 2 years ago and is unable provide for her 4 children. The other families are “child-headed” with the eldest being between 12 and 16 years old. The grant will provide new mattresses, blankets and pillows for each child. They have been finding it increasingly difficult to sleep, as the mud floors are hard and cold as winter is setting in. The young children in the families, who were used to snuggling up to their parents to keep warm, will benefit incredibly from this gift, many will share a mattress with their siblings.

The latest additions to this support program are two young boys aged 7 and 12 .They are 2 of Ella’s 4 children. Ella died last month, at the age of 39, of HIV and TB leaving the community devastated. She worked alongside the Chief setting up a committee to establish an HIV support program and orphan care. She organised the volunteers to start the first Shine feeding program in April 2010. Her children are now being cared for by Ella’s elderly mother in Ella’s home. The boys will be receiving a mattress and also the support they need through the provision of food helping their grandma cope with caring for them. Suzen is really excited about the delivery of these mattresses as it will give hope to the whole community.

Suzen has also organised for repairs to Alwa’s wheel chair which was in such bad repair she couldn’t use it. Recently Suzen needed to get her to the hospital as she had a severe ear infection. Suzen had to carry her on her back from her house to the track to then get transport to the hospital. Alwa was so thankful for the support Shine gave her through funding the treatment and transport.
